Nightmare travelling companion
I was in the middle row of an airplane and the woman next to me had a metal mask on. One of her companions asked me to move. It was similar to a burka but metal. I had never seen it before..

Appalachian Trail Buddies, Starting March/April 2012
Hi there,
My name is Elena, i'm 21 from Derbyshire, England, currently living in Canada.
My next ambition is to hike the Appalachian trail in the states, 2012 season. I love the outdoors, hiking is my passion and i am excited to take on the challenge that is all over 2,000 miles of the trail.
I feel this is a trip i cannot undertake alone though, for safety reasons etc and so i am looking for people, from whatever walk of life, to join me on this adventure, have fun and revel in the challenge and experience.
Have you ever been inspired to take upon the challenge of the Appalachian Trail or something similar? Are you physically fit and able? Are you available from March/April 2012? Are you eligible for a tourist visa for the USA? Are you prepared to go without home comforts?
I definately recommend reading 'A Walk In The Woods' By Bill Bryson too, if you are interested.

What sources can I use to apply for a grant that will cover
In the current climate, not many I would imagine. Have you looked into being a travel writer or photographer? There's always a need in this area but it's a very competitive marketplace as lots of people want a piece of it (for obvious reasons)..

Any over 50's travellers in and around London?
Hi there,
We are a group of friendly, fun and over 50 travellers who meet up in London every 4 weeks or so in an informal environment to talk about everything travel related, share our travel tips and a few of us have recently been on holiday together. We're all part of an online travel community too. Next meeting is in early April in London. Let me know if you're keen and I'll send more details.
Regards,
Bernie

Mongol Rally 2011 - Teammate Wanted!
Does driving across 25 countries, in 6 weeks, whet your travelling appetite?! If so, then please read on...
Team 'Between a Yak and a Hard Place' on this year's Mongol Rally could do with an extra body or two! Currently, there are just two of us, which is perfectly fine, but we'd like to share this epic adventure with a couple more intrepid travellers!
We aim to complete the (approximately!) 10,000 mile journey in a second-hand ambulance, which we will donate upon our arrival. We're hopeful that sponsorship can be sought to cover the cost of purchasing the ambulance, along with some essential supplies. We're also aiming to raise 500 each for The Christina Noble Children's Foundation and Ronald McDonald House Charities, through fundraising events and donations.
Our route will take us across Europe and Asia, from Goodwood in the UK to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, through the following countries: UK, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iraq? (Kurdistan), Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan? (only a few hundred metres across the border, technically no-man's land before the border posts), Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia and finally Mongolia!

* We leave on 23rd July 2011 and should be able to return by 5th September 2011.

Go to Zanzibar with me
It would certainly help if you posted a fuller introduction in the Introductions Forum, Johan.
Perhaps tell people that you that you run a safari company? You were looking for a travel companion and not just paying punters, weren't you? :?.

Hi Ccile and welcome to Aardvark. I hope you're able to find a suitable travelling partner. Your trip sounds pretty adventurous.
Sorry to be a boring old fogey but I worry about someone hitch-hiking these days. Please do be careful.
