Some Useful Tips For Safe traveling
Are these tips from your own experience or are they simply taken from somewhere? And what countries are they useful for? Because I can't imagine sleeping with a flashlight in a European hotel room or hostel...
But there is sure a point about luggage, because I feel quite nervous when I somehow have to be even ten steps far from my bag on the road or while accomodating..

First Aid Kit
Well, you do need to pack the basic first aid kit, such as alcohol, wound dressings and cotton balls. In case you have a special medical condition or if you know that the place you are going is plagued by a particular disease, then bringing the specified medication would

Bird flu?
Birds, just like people, get the flu. Bird flu viruses infect birds, including chickens, other poultry and wild birds such as ducks. Most bird flu viruses can only infect other birds. However, bird flu can pose health risks to people. The first case of a bird flu virus infecting a person directly, H5N1, was in Hong Kong in 1997. Since then, the bird flu virus has spread to birds in countries in Asia, Africa and Europe.
Human infection is still very rare, but the virus that causes the infection in birds might change, or mutate, to more easily infect humans. This could lead to a pandemic, or a worldwide outbreak of the illness..

Has anyone used doxycycline?
Doxycycline is used to treat many different bacterial infections, such as urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea, and chlamydia, periodontitis (gum disease), and others. Doxycycline is also used to treat blemishes, bumps, and acne-like lesions caused by rosacea. It will not treat facial redness caused by rosacea. Doxycycline may be used in combination with other medicines to treat certain amoeba infections..

Should I take antibiotics for travellers diarrhoea with me?
I'd say no. "Travellers diarreah" is generaly just a reaction to the local bugs which your body isn't acustomed to. By taking wide spectrum antibiotics all you end up doing is destroying whatever resistance you had. Just be carefull with what you eat at first and you'll slowly build up a resistance.
If on the other hand you get something more serious then of course you'll need to take medicine to treat it , but specific to what you are suffering. All of which can be bought in Hong Kong. Also don't forget traditional chineese medicine , if you can find someone who speaks english or a translator I've seen spectacular results with traditional chineese remedies..

Avoiding Stomach Illness
I find the best thing to do to avoid stomach upsets is too avoid delicacy style foods - ice cream, water from taps and other common sense....
First, the water in Europe is not a problem. Other places, maybe less so, but I know people use the fountains in Italy to fill their water bottles, for example, with no problem.
Second, I am NOT going to skip having gelato in Italy! Ice cream or gelato is not going to give you stomach problems..

Money when travelling through Africa
Hi
My husband and I are doing a 58 day overland tour from Kenya down to South Africa and we need to pay around 1200 each in USD as a local payment the day before the trip starts. We'd actually need a bit more than this for things like VISAs, etc along the way. This would be fine for us to get at home before we leave, however we have 2 weeks of volunteer work in Tanzania before the tour begins and I'm not sure that carrying around that amount of money is such a great idea. I've thought about sewing pockets into clothes and underwear, etc. but it's still an awful lot of money to carry around on us for 2 weeks - I wouldn't even do that here in the UK let alone in Africa!
I've heard that the exchange rate for traveller's cheques is really high and obviously I won't be able to draw that much money out of ATMs so any advice on what to do would be much appreciated.

Ten Safest Countries
Yes I would agree with Scandinavia as a safe culture. I feel welcomed and that the society there is very functional and healthy. However the scandinavian cultures are not shy of risk, for example look at some of the sports that are popular there - rallying, ski jumping, etc. It must be the viking gene! :).

Swine flu virus map
Don't panic people, normal flu affects more people every year.
Swine flu is small fry.
E.g.
" these annual epidemics result in about three to five million cases of severe illness, and about 250 000 to 500 000 deaths."
