People who are so inundated with the beaches of Southeast Asia would probably raise an eyebrow or two when they hear about Morocco. As if they will surely ask, what will I do if I vacation to Morocco? Well, if you were travel tourist of the world, you would know about Morocco, which probably became immortal with the movie Casablanca. Then in addition, there is the matter about Moroccan culture and the desert climate.
The Twin Faces of Morocco
On your journeys travel to Morocco, you will come to experience what many tourists have been talking about, namely, Fez and Marrakesh. Both places are actually the most vibrant cities in Morocco. Between Fez and Marrakesh, you can experience the twin faces of Morocco – between ancient tradition and modernity. It is pretty much reflects how each city in Morocco has come to nurture both their respective medina or old walled city and Gueliz or new city.
In Fez
In Fez, you can practically be transported in time, specifically to 1,200 years ago. The city has not changed much – it is as if the walled city has been protecting itself against modern influences.
To get around Fez, it is either you travel by foot or ride on a mule. Must see places in Fez include ancient mausoleum of the city’s founder - Moulay Idriss II, who is said to be a great grandson of the prophet Mohammed. Another must see site in Fez is the Karaouine University, the oldest university in the world. Karaouine was established in the 9th century and it continues to operate to this day.
In Marrakesh
Meanwhile, in Marrakesh you can find the Djemaa el Fna, which is known as the busiest square in Africa. At daytime, the Djemaa teems with storytellers, acrobats, musicians and dancers. Water sellers can be found there too. At nighttime, this square turns into the busiest food square in Africa.
